NHRC notice to SSP, Banaskantha, Gujarat over suicide of a student due to trauma of beating by school teachers (04.3.2015)

New Delhi, 4th March, 2015

The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of media reports that a 16 year old boy, student of class 10th in Gayatri Vidyalaya, Tharad Taluka, Banaskantha, Gujarat, allegedly committed suicide after he was confined and severely beaten up in the school premises by four teachers for damaging a camera of the school. The reports were carried on the 18th February, 2015.

The Commission has issued notice to the Senior Superintendent of Police, Banaskantha, Gujarat to enquire into the incident and submit a report within four weeks.

Reportedly, the victim boy was under trauma after the incident and had narrated this to his father a few hours before he ended his life. The police had registered a case against the four teachers on the complaint of the parents of the boy.
