NHRC notice to the Chief Secretary & DGP, Assam on allegations of firing by forest personnel at helpless villagers during Khagrabari violence (16.5.2014)

New Delhi, 16th May, 2014

The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of media reports that some of the survivors of violent attack by miscreants in Village Khagrabari, District Baksa, Assam in which 20 persons had died, made a specific complaint to a team of CID of Assam Police that when the armed miscreants attacked the villagers, they rushed to the forest beat office in Khagrabari, but instead of helping them, the forest personnel allegedly fired at them and set some of the houses on fire.

The Commission has observed that the contents of the press report, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of human rights. It has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police, Assam, calling for factual reports within two weeks.
