NHRC notice to the Government of Karnataka over botched up cataract surgery in Mandya (20.7.2015)

The National Human Rights Commission has issued a notice to the Chief Secretary, Government of Karnataka after taking suo motu cognizance of a media report that seven senior citizens lost sight of their one eye after a cataract surgery at a free camp in Mandya district.

The Commission has observed that the contents of the media report, if true, raise a serious issue of gross violation of human rights. It has given four weeks' time to the State Government to submit a report in the matter.

According to the media report, carried on the 6th July, 2015, the Free Eye Camp was organised at Bhagwan Mahavir Eye Hospital on the 1st April, 2015 under the 'National Swasthya Beema Yojana'. Few days after the surgery, the patients started feeling severe itching leading to swelling in the operated eye and slowly it lost the vision.
