NHRC notice to the Government of Tamil Nadu over 52 bonded labourers, mostly minors, rescued from a borewell firm in Chennai (25.08.2015)

The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report that 52 bonded labourers, mostly minors, from Chhatishgarh and Odisha, were rescued from a borewell firm in Avadi, Chennai, Tamil Nadu. They were forced to work for about 15 hours without being paid the wages.
The Commission has observed that the contents of the news report, if true, would amount to gross violation of human rights of the victims. Accordingly, it has issued a notice to the State Government, through its Chief Secretary, calling for a report in the matter within four weeks.
According to the media report, carried on the 9th August,2015, a special team led by the Child Protection Officer, Narayanpur, Chhatishgarh, came to Chennai in search of a missing person and stumbled upon the victims. Some local agents had trapped them by paying an initial advance of Rs. 1000/- with a promised monthly salary of Rs.4000, which was never paid for several months.
