NHRC notice to the Gujarat Government on denial of scholarships to 3125 Dalit students in Ahmedabad.
New Delhi, 13th June, 2013
The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report alleging denial of scholarships to 3125 Dalit students in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Out of this, applications of 1613 students for scholarship are pending, whereas, 1512 have been denied due to lack of funds. Allegedly, Rs.3 crores have been siphoned off from the money meant for them.
The Commission, in its notice to the Chief Secretary, Government of Gujarat, returnable in four weeks, has observed that the contents of the report, if true, paint a worrisome picture and constitute a gross violation of human rights of the Dalit students. In view of their socio-economic backwardness, they deserve to be given special care and that is why such special provisions for scholarships to them have been made. Any failure in their implementation would defeat the whole purpose.
