NHRC notices to Chennai DM, SSP and DGP, Tamil Nadu into alleged fake encounter of five persons


New Delhi, February 24th, 2012
The National Human Rights Commission has issued notices to the Director General Police, Tamil Nadu, District Magistrate and Senior Superintendent of Police, Chennai to investigate the alleged death of five suspects in a police encounter in Chennai on Wednesday, the 22nd February, 2012, midnight.

Acting on a complaint based on media reports, the Commission has directed them to respond to its notice within eight weeks along with the magisterial enquiry report, post-mortem report and independent investigation report into the incident as per the guidelines of the Commission.

Allegedly, police was on look out for a gang of robbers reportedly involved in a series of bank robberies in the city. In this connection, they surrounded a house at Velachery in Chennai where some suspects were lodged. Encounter happened when instead of surrendering to the police, the alleged suspects opened fire at police injuring two inspectors.
