NHRC notices to DM and SP, Rampur, UP over reports of abduction and sexual assault of eight women workers (04.2.2015)

New Delhi, 4th February, 2015

The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report that a brick kiln owner, along with a labour contractor and three others, picked up the workers at a brick kiln in Village Dundai of District Rampur, Uttar Pradesh on the 19th January, 2015 and kept the men and women in separate rooms of a building and thereafter sexually assaulted eight women. They were released on the next day. The workers approached the police and filed a complaint with the Shahaj Nagar Police Station.

The Commission has observed that the contents of the press report, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of human rights of the victim workers. Accordingly, it has issued notices to the District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police, Rampur, Uttar Pradesh calling for a report within two weeks.
