NHRC notices to Union Ministry of Finance and CMD, UCO Bank over reports of removal of an ST from the job on the basis of caste (08.1.2016)

The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report that a person, belonging to the Scheduled Tribe and who worked for ten long years as Peon against an honorarium, was subjected to discrimination for his caste and eventually removed from the job in a nationalized Bank.
Reportedly, at the instance of senior officers in the Dodhar Branch of UCO Bank, in Sheopur district of Madhya Pradesh, the employees discontinued taking water served by the victim, Ramswarup Sahar and thus subjected him to untouchability. Reportedly, he has also made a complaint in this regard to the District Collector, Sheopur.
The Commission has observed that the allegations made in the press report, if true, raise a serious issue of discrimination against Schedule Tribe and gross violation of his human rights. It has issued notices to the Secretary, Department of Financial Services, Union Ministry of Finance and Chief Managing Director, UCO Bank, Kolkata directing them to get the allegations made in the complaint enquired into and submit an enquiry report within four weeks.
