NHRC notices to Union Ministry of Oil and Natural Gas Resources, GAIL and DM, East Godavari seeking reports on explosion in gas pipeline (02.7.2014)

New Delhi, 2nd July, 2014

The National Human Rights Commission, taking suo motu cognizance of a media report on the 30th June, 2014 that an explosion in a pipeline of Gas Authority of India (GAIL) killed 15 people and injured 12 near Nagaram village in East Godavari District in Andhra Pradesh on the 28th June, 2014. It has issued notices to the Secretary, Union Ministry of Oil and Natural Gas Resources, CMD, Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL) and District Magistrate, East Godavari District, Andhra Pradesh calling for reports in the matter within two weeks.

According to the media report, the people in the village had complained to the GAIL authorities about the gas leakage but no action was taken to rectify the same. The Commission has observed that the contents of media report, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of human rights of persons who died and those who were injured in the incident.
