NHRC organized an Interactive Session of police personnel and students of Winter Internship Programme.

A detailed half-day Interactive Session was held in the National Human Rights Commission on 13th January, 2012, in which students participating in the Winter Internship Programme, 2012 as well as the Delhi Police Officers undergoing training at the Jharodakalan and Rajendra Place Police Training Establishments were the participants. This is an innovative step taken by NHRC to provide a forum/platform for these students to have first in hand information about the police attitudes and their point of view besides sensitizing the police officers regarding the expectations of the general public, especially the youth.
The Session was attended by Hon'ble Member, Shri P.C. Sharma and Director General (I), Shri Sunil Krishna besides JS (Trg) and the other officers of the Training Division. Hon'ble Member addressed the participants and talked to them on various issues relating to human rights arising during the police interface with the public. These included governance issues as well as the issues of corruption besides wrong practices by police like false encounters and wrongful implications of innocent people. He related actual cases dealt by NHRC to prove his point of some of these wrongful practices. He impressed upon the police officials to resist from wrongful practices as it creates a feeling of dissatisfaction of general public against the police force. He also stated that senior leadership should shield the junior officials against political pressure.
Director General (I), Shri Sunil Krishna also addressed various issues raised by the participants like the sense of security imparted by the presence of the police personnel at the place of incidence, police reforms pursuant the directions in the petition filed by Prakash Singh Vs. Union of India and use of RTI. He also impressed upon the police personnel to increase the level of sensitivity to the needs of the general public, besides the need of non-discrimination against the disadvantaged sections of society.
