NHRC recommends Rs.2 lakh monetary relief in a case of death in judicial custody in Rajasthan



New Delhi, 3rd October, 2013

The National Human Rights Commission has asked the Government of Rajasthan to pay a sum of Rs.2 Lakh as monetary relief to the next of kin of Suresh, who committed suicide by hanging himself while in judicial custody. It has also sought compliance report along with proof of payment within six weeks.
Earlier, in response to the Commission's notices, the Additional Chief Secretary, Home Department, Government of Rajasthan confirmed the incident and accepted the lapse of jail staff. He also said that the State Government does not have any objection for payment of monetary relief to the next of kin of the deceaed.
The Commission took cognizance of the incident on an intimation received from Superintendent, Central Prison, Bikaner about the incident. Suresh was serving sentence for life imprisonment for torturing and killing his wife. He was a resident of Village Role, District Bikaner.
