NHRC releases a Handbook on Employment of the Disabled

New Delhi, 2 May 2006
The National Human Rights Commission has brought out a Handbook on 'Employment of Persons with Disabilities in Government of India'. Dr. Justice A.S. Anand, Chairperson, NHRC released the book at a function in New Delhi today.
The Handbook, in a question-answer form, answers almost all questions pertaining to the employment of physically challenged. Divided into 15 chapters, the book tries to sensitize the employers on the rights of the disabled. From giving the definition of disability, the book goes on to help in identification of posts and modifications in the interview and written tests for the disabled. The book also advocates the importance of a barrier-free work environment. The Handbook, a joint effort of NHRC and the Canadian Human Rights Commission, is an outcome of a linkage project launched in 2003. The Human Rights Law Network, which worked on the project, in its studies revealed the level of ignorance and insensitivity regarding the rights of the disabled persons. Thus the Commission took up the task of bringing out such a comprehensive publication. The Handbook, which gives an insight into employment related aspects of Disability Law, can be a ready-recknor for both the implementer and the beneficiary. The Handbook has been brought out in Braille as well for the visually impaired.
The Commission also released a compilation of International Instruments on Human Rights in Hindi. The compilation has come out in two volumes. The first volume, which deals with Universal Instruments, has been divided into two parts, while the second volume deals with Regional Instruments.
