Justice Shri D. Murugesan, Member, National Human Rights Commission inaugurated a day long Regional Workshop on 'Elimination of Bonded Labour' in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh on the 11th September, 2015. It was organised by the Commission in collaboration with the Government of Uttar Pradesh. Officers and different stakeholders, including representatives of NGOs and Brick Kilns Associations from the two States, attended the Workshop. NHRC officers and representatives of State Human Rights Commissions of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand were present.
The objective of the Workshop was to familiarize and sensitize the District Magistrates, Sub-Divisional Magistrates, State Labour Officers and Members of Vigilance Committees etc. in the process of identification, release and rehabilitation of bonded labourers and with the provisions of Bonded Labour System (Abolition) Act, 1976 and other related legislations. The Commission has organised 31 workshops on elimination of bonded labour so far.
