NHRC's Foundation Day celebration

The National Human Rights Commission observed its Foundation Day on the 12th October. It was on this day in 1993 that the NHRC was set up. A cultural programme was organised by the NHRC fraternity at FICCI Auditorium, New Delhi to celebrate the occasion.
Addressing the gathering on the occasion, Mr. Justice K.G. Balakrishnan, Chairperson, NHRC expressed happiness that the recommendations by the Commission are accepted and implemented by the Central and the State Governments. However, he expressed concern over the increasing number of complaints on human rights violations. He said that on its part the Commission has been speedily disposing of the complaints, and is adopting four mechanisms for the same. These include Full Court, Full Commission, Division Benches and Single Member Benches. Nevertheless, given the large size of the country, it is imperative that the State Governments set up State Human Rights Commissions which are in conformity with the 'Paris Principles'. Till date only 18 States have set up the State Human Rights Commissions. Underlining the different areas of work taken up by the Commission, Mr. Justice Balakrishnan said that the ultimate goal of NHRC is to create human rights culture in the country.
