NHRC's Open Hearing and Camp Sitting for Andhra Pradesh and Telangana begins at Hyderabad (22.4.2015)

A three day 'Open Hearing' and 'Camp Sitting' of the National Human Rights Commission on the matters of human rights violations related to the States of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana began at Hyderabad today at Dr. MCR HRD Institute, Hyderabad.
Inaugurating the 'Open Hearing' and 'Camp Sitting', Mr. Justice K. G. Balakrishnan, Chairperson, NHRC said that poor and marginalized people need support of the States in protection of their rights. The NHRC is committed to protect civil, political, economic, cultural and social rights of people and wherever violations of these rights comes to the notice of the Commission it recommends monetary relief to the victims as well as action against the guilty public servants.
Mr. Raymond Peter, Principal Secretary, SC Development Department said that though Telangana is a new State, social welfare schemes are being implemented. Some new programmes and welfare schemes for the marginalized groups are also being finalised. Mr. Lingraj Panigrahi, Principal Secretary, Govt. of Andhra Pradesh also talked about the various welfare schemes of the State Government.
Earlier, giving a background of the Camp Sittings and Open Hearings of the Commission, Mr. A. K. Garg, Registrar (Law), NHRC said that through them the Commission gets to hear the grievances of poor and marginalized sections of society to give directions for necessary action and relief on the spot. The Commission has received complaints about atrocities on Scheduled Castes from these States also. Naxalism is a problem in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana and if the voices of the poor are not heard, they may be vulnerable to the influence of naxalites.
61 cases were taken up during the open hearing today in the three Benches comprising of Mr. Justice Cyriac Joseph, Mr. Justice D. Murugesan and Mr. S. C. Sinha respectively.
