NHRC'S WINTER INTERNSHIP PROGRAMME
The Commission organized one month long winter internship programme in New Delhi. This was the ninth batch of interns for winter programme. Fifty three
post graduate level students of different disciplines from fifteen States and Union Territories attended this programme which was inaugurated by Member, Mr. Justice
G.P. Mathur on 17th December, 2008. The interns included thirty two girls and twenty one boys. They were short listed from over 170 applicants. The aim of the internship programme was to sensitize young students about the protection and promotion of human rights. During the eighty eight sessions, the interns were exposed to various legal social and economic aspects of the human rights by the eminent guest faculties and in-house faculty members and were also attached to various sections in the Commission for on the job exposure. The interns were also guided in preparing sixteen project reports on human rights related issues. A debate competition was also organized for interns. Addressing the valedictory session, Member, NHRC, Mr. Justice G.P. Mathur said that the interns should make the best use of the exposure they have got on the issue of human rights and sensitize others in the society. In the valedictory address, Member, NHRC, Mr. P.C. Sharma expressed happiness that this batch of interns represented different parts of the country. He said, the interns are ambassadors of the Commission who carry forward the message that having a human rights approach in our lives is the need of the hour. Mr. Sharma also said, the interns should try to reach out people at the grass root level, in Panchayats and local bodies to spread the human rights awareness. The Secretary General, NHRC, Mr. A.K. Jain complimented the young students for showing keen interest in the internship programme and hoped that they will continue to take interest in promoting human rights awareness wherever they live and work.
