NHRC seeks factual report from DGP, Haryana on beating
of a resident of DLF by the police

The National Human Rights Commission sent notice to DGP Haryana on a report which said a resident of DLF in Gurgaon was beaten up by the police with belts and baton. Taking Suo-Motu cognizance of a newspaper report, the Commission said the whole incident raised a serious issue of violation of human rights of the citizen. The report published in 'The Times of India' on November 17,2006 had said that one Shri Jitender Singh Sandhu was beaten up by the police for about 20 minutes as he had asked the police to behave properly. The incident took place when Mr. Sandhu and his daughter were taking a walk and the cops questioned who they are. On being told that they are father and daughter, the cops did not believe and used bad language. On being asked to behave properly, the cops took Shri Sandhu to police station and beat him. As per the SSP, Gurgaon, the three policemen involved in the incident had been suspended, pending the departmental enquiry. The Commission has asked the DGP, Haryana to convey the outcome of the enquiry.
