NHRC sends notice to Delhi Police Chief and Chief Secretary on the attempt on a lady doctor in a hospital hostel

New Delhi October 03, 2007 The National Human Rights Commission has sent notice to the Delhi Police Chief and Chief Secretary, on the issue of security of doctors, particularly women doctors in the hospital. The Commission which went through a distressing report in the "Hindustan Times" dated September 26, 2007, captioned "Rape or suicide bid", said that the incident is a serious issue of violation of human rights of lady doctors within the hospital premises.

As per the press report, a 24 year old lady doctor of the paediatric ward of the Employees State Insurance Cooperation (ESIC), Moti Nagar in West Delhi, was found unconscious in the hostel room of the hospital. The report said that the medical examination confirmed injury marks on her private parts and strangulation marks on her neck, suggesting that it was a case of rape and attempted murder. The report, further, said that the victim was in coma, on ventilator support and not in a position to give statement.

The Commission after going through the press report said that the incident raised the issue of security of doctors, though a case of attempt to rape and murder had been registered against unidentified accused. The Commission has given four weeks time to the two authorities for a factual report on the incident.
