NHRC sends notice to Director, AIIMS on recovery of a towel from a patient's abdomen

New Delhi August 13, 2007 The National Human Rights Commission has sent notice to the Director, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, on a report which said that a towel was left inside the abdomen of a patient who was operated for gall bladder stone at the Institute. Taking suo-motu cognizance of a newspaper report published in "Dainik Hindustan" on August 10, 2007, the Commission called it a serious issue of human rights violation.

As per the report, 65 years old Guru Sharan Kaur, was operated on July 27, 2007 for gall-bladder stone at AIIMS. She later complained of acute pain in her abdomen, which the doctors at AIIMS said was due to puss formation in her abdomen. They prescribed painkillers which however did not provide any relief. The patient went to a private hospital where the CT Scan showed a cloth like object in her abdomen. Later on she was operated upon and a towel was taken out from her abdomen which was allegedly left behind by the AIIMS doctors, who had earlier operated her.

The Commission after going through the distressing press report has asked for a factual report from the Director, AIIMS within four weeks.
