NHRC sends notice to SSP, Vishakhapatnam and DGP, Andhra Pradesh on the alleged rape of 11 tribal women
New Delhi August 30, 2007 The Commission also took cognizance of a report which appeared in the "Indian Express" on August 22, 2007. According to the report, 21 personnel of a Special Party of Police deployed for anti-Naxalite operations, rounded up 11 married tribal women from Vakapalli village of Madgula Mandal in Vishakhapatnam district of Andhra Pradesh and raped them.
The victims later complained to the Sub-Collector that the police had threatened them not to reveal the incident to anyone. The report also said that the victims were sent to a King George Hospital at Vishakhapatnam for a medical examination.
The Commission after going through the report has sent a notice to the SSP, Vishakhapatnam and DGP, Andhra Pradesh for a factual report within four weeks.
