NHRC sends notice to the Chief Secretary, UP, on women inmates languishing in jails

New Delhi March 13, 2008

The National Human Rights Commission has issued notice to the Chief Secretary, UP, on a news report which highlighted the plight of women inmates and their babies in UP Jails. Taking suo-motu cognizance of the report published in “The Hindu” on February 29, 2008, the Commission said that the news report raises serious issue of violation of human rights of women inmates and their babies.



According to the press report, thousands of women accused of committing atrocities related to dowry had been languishing in jails. The report further said that the women in the age of 17 to 70 years, had been wrongly confined in jails. A number of them are disabled and sick and many of them have nursing babies.



The Commission after going through the press report has asked the Chief Secretary, UP, to provide a factual report within four weeks.
