NHRC takes suo motu cognizance of media reports on bravery show risking life of students in Tamil Nadu

The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of media reports on 28th July, 2009 alleging that an Elementary Municipal School at Keezhperumpakkam in Villupuram District of Tamil Nadu organized an event of bravery show in which a motor cyclist rode over the outstretch hands of young students aged about 10 years on 16th July, 2009. In another such stunt, the motor cyclist rode over a wooden plank placed on a girl lying on the floor. The show was a part of a ceremony organized in the memory of Congress Leader K. Kamaraj. The Commission has issued a notice to the Chief Secretary, Tamil Nadu calling for a factual report within four weeks from the date of its receipt saying that the contents of the media reports, if true, raise serious issue of violation of human rights of the students as they were reportedly exposed to high risk of being hurt during the stunts.
