NHRC takes Suo-Motu Cognizance of media reports on punishment meted out to a Delhi school girl

The National Human Rights Commission has taken Suo-Motu Cognizance of distressing news reports alleging that an 11 year old student Shanno of M.C.D. Girls Primary School, Bawana had to be admitted to a hospital following punishment meted to her by the school teacher. According to reports, Shanno was made to stand in the sun for more than an hour on 14th April, 2009 by her teacher for not completing her home work. She started bleeding from her nose and collapsed on her way home. She was admitted to Lok Nayak Hospital in a critical condition. The reports alleged that her blood pleasure was very low and her pulse extremely weak.

The Commission has said that the contents of the reports raise serious issues of human rights violation of the school girl and has asked the Commissioner, Municipal Corporation Delhi, to send a factual report within four weeks.
