NHRC takes suo motu cognizance of media reports on the death of two workers while cleaning sewer in Delhi

There were reports in media on 04.06.2009 that cleaning of a sewer in the Maurice Nagar area of North Delhi led to the death of two workers Rajesh, 43 years and Brahm Prakash, 35 years. According to these reports, the two were trapped inside a sewer while cleaning it. Some men dragged them out only to be found in an unconscious state. They were rushed to the Bara Hindu Rao Hospital, where they were declared brought dead. A preliminary postmortem examination report of the deceased suggested that they died due to asphyxiation after consuming poisonous gases. The Commission took suo motu cognizance of media reports on the grounds that the contents of the reports, if true, raised a serious issue of the violation of the human rights of the victims and issued a notice to the Chief Secretary, Government of NCT of Delhi calling for a factual report within four weeks.
