NHRC takes suo motu cognizance of media reports on the deaths of homeless persons: Issues notice to Delhi Government
New Delhi: 22nd January, 2014
The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of media reports alleging deaths of several homeless persons due to cold and rainy night in Delhi. The State Government had failed to make a shelter plan and a policy for the homeless persons despite directives from the High Court and the Supreme Court.
In one of the reports, carried on the 19th January, 2014, it was stated that six persons died in the intervening night of the previous day around Kashmere Gate in North Delhi. Another report of the same date says that due to the absence of night shelters, 12 homeless persons died in the National Capital during the last 24 hours.
The Commission has observed that the contents of the news stories, if true, raised a serious issue of violation of human rights and issued a notice to the Chief Secretary, Government of NCT of Delhi calling for a report within two weeks.
