NHRC takes up the cause of the disabled
With a view to consider the problems being faced by the disabled people in the country more a human rights perspective, the National Human Rights Commission has set up a Core Group on Disability related issues. This is an expression of the Commission’s deep concern about the protection of the rights of the disabled and for improvement of their conditions.
This Core Group will enable the Commission to have regular consultation with experts in the field. It will identify important human rights issues concerning disabled persons and review policies adopted so far by the Central/State Governments and suggest possible interventions by the Commission alongwith the nature of strategies to be adopted. The Group shall monitor action being taken for the protection of the rights of the disabled and suggest steps for creation of awareness of these rights. It will also identify broad areas of co-operation between the Commission and non-governmental organizations engaged in the advancement of the Rights of the Disabled.
The Core Group is being headed by Shri B.N. Sharma, Former Chief Commissioner for Disabilities and currently the Principal Resident Commissioner, Rajasthan. The other members of the Group are Prof. (Smt.) Amita Dhanda, National Academy of Legal Studies And Research University, Hyderabad, Shri Lal Advani, President, Indian Association for Special Education and Rehabilitation, Shri S.K. Rungta, Secretary General, National Federation for Blind, Ms. Anuradha Mohit, Deputy Chief Commissioner for Disabilities, Shri Javed Abidi, Executive Director, National Centre for Promotion of Employment for Disabled People and Shri Takur Hari Prasad.
