NHRC TEAM VISITS DISTRICT HOSHIARPUR IN PUNJAB

In continuity with NHRC's programme of visits to 28 districts in different states of the country, this time a team went to Hoshiarpur in Punjab. NHRC Acting Chairperson, Justice Shri G.P. Mathur led the team, comprising Secretary General, Shri A.K. Jain and Director (Admn.), Dr. Sanjay Dubey. During the five days stay in the District from the 27th November to 1st December, 2009, the team visited schools, primary and community health centres, police stations, old age homes, jail, ration shops to make an assessment of the level of awareness and enforcement of human rights. A workshop of District level functionaries was also organized on the 30th November, 2009. Peoples' representatives, NGOs and media persons also attended the workshop. The aim of the workshop was to make people aware about their rights and to monitor the implementation of the recommendations of the Commission on specific human rights issues. The issues concerning right to food, education, health, custodial justice were paid specific attention during the field visits and the workshops.
