NHRC team visits Lakshadweep
A team of NHRC officers went to the Lakshadweep Islands from 26th to 29th April, 2013 to look into the issues of human rights violations, review the status of implementation of Commission's recommendations and sensitize the officers of the UT Administration. The team comprised Shri B.P. Vishwakarma, Presenting Officer, Shri A.K. Parashar, Joint Registrar, Shri S.K. Jain, SSP and Dr. Savita Bhakhry, Deputy Secretary (Research). Various issues were discussed in a meeting with senior officers, functionaries of District Panchayats and NGOs. These included, among others, education, health, employment, drinking water, disability and implementation of centrally sponsored schemes like Mid-day Meal, ICDS and NREGA. Later, at a Public Hearing, the team received complaints about human rights violations. The complaints prompted the team to visit the Indira Gandhi Hospital and a Police Station in Kavaratti for an on-the-spot assessment of the situation.
