Shri S.C. Sinha, Member, NHRC, accompanied by Dr. Savita Bhakhry, Joint Director (Research), Shri K.H.C. Rao, Dy. S.P., Shri C.S. Mawri, AR (Law) and Sushri Sonali Huria, Research Consultant, visited North Sikkim from 24th-29th June, 2014 in connection with the ‘visit to 28 Backward District Programme’ of the Commission. The team visited PDS shops, District Hospital, schools, Health Centres, Aanganwadi Centres and made an on-the-spot assessment of the human rights situation, awareness and implemen-tation of welfare schemes. A workshop on human rights awareness was organised for the District level functionaries which was also attended by the representatives of some NGOs. The Member also met with the senior officers of the District representing different departments and sensitized them on the importance of human rights issues and the Commission’s interventions.
