NHRC to investigate atrocities on Dalits in Haryana
The Commission, on 3 June 2003, directed its Investigation Division to investigate a case of alleged atrocities on Dalit families in Haryana and submit a report within three weeks.
The Commission had earlier taken cognizance of a petition/complaint brought to it by Shri Buta Singh, Member of Parliament and ex-Home Minister, Ch. Bhajan Lal, former Chief Minister, Haryana and Shri R. K. Punia, former Minister of Industries, Haryana. The complainants had alleged that atrocities had been committed on some dalits in Harsola Village of Kaithal District in Haryana. The complainants also alleged the involvement of influential persons in the committing of these atrocities.
The Commission noted that the allegations, if true, were of a very serious nature and would constitute grave violations of the human rights of Dalits of Harsola village.
The Commission, therefore, directed its Director General (Investigation) to despatch an investigation team from the Investigation Division of the Commission and directed the team to visit the site and conduct an inquiry/ investigation into the allegations expeditiously. The team was also directed to collect all relevant records from the District Administration/ Police.
