NHRC to SSP, Gautam Budh Nagar, UP; Submit report on the death of RTI activist (16.5.2014)

The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report that despite the requests made to police for providing protection to an RTI activist, Chandra Mohan Sharma, in the wake of threats from land mafia, the police did not take any action. Sharma, aged 38 years, was charred to death inside his car in Greater NOIDA, Uttar Pradesh on the 2nd May, 2014.
Reportedly, the allegations have been made by the wife of the deceased who said that the police was trying to convert the killing of her husband into a mishap. According to the media report, this was the third incident in the last six months in which an RTI activist had been targeted in Greater NOIDA.
The Commission has observed that the contents of the press report, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of human rights of the victim and issued a notice to the Senior Superintendent of Police, Gautam Budh Nagar, UP calling for a report within two weeks.
