Non-availability of disabled friendly cars; NHRC seeks comments from the Government
New Delhi, 13 January 2006
Noting the concern of disabled persons over the non-availability of disabled friendly cars in India, the Commission has sought comments from the Government. The Commission took cognizance of a complaint from a disabled person that the car manufacturing companies have discontinued manufacturing of the vehicles for physically challenged persons which is causing hindrance to those who want to be self-dependent. The complainant, who is totally ridden on wheel chair since he sustained a spinal injury in a road accident and got both of his limbs paralyzed, has pointed out that Maruti Udyog Limited being a public sector undertaking, should have some social responsibility and they should not stop the manufacturing of such type of vehicles.
The Commission has forwarded a copy of the complaint to the Secretary, Ministry of Heavy Industries for his comments within three weeks.
