NOTICE ISSUED TO AIIMS OVER DENIAL OF BED TO AKSHARDHAM HERO

The National Human Rights Commission took suo motu cognizance of a news item "AIIMS refuses bed to Akshardham hero" which appeared in a national daily on 27 September 2003. The Commission asked the Director, AIIMS to look into that report and submit his comments within one week.
According to the news item, AIIMS had no place for the National Security Guard (NSG) commando, Surjan Singh, who risked his life to flush out terrorists from the Akshardham temple. It further said that the National Security Guard had made a formal request for a bed in the intensive care unit (ICU) of the hospital for 25 year old Singh about 10 days back. "However, the premier hospital has decided that it cannot spare a bed for the Akshardham hero" who received four bullet injuries and is currently languishing in an Ahmedabad hospital.
