Notice issued to MHA on the denial of visas to Sikh NRIs
The Commission received a reference from the Chairman, National Commission for Minorities pointing out that certain Sikh NRIs who were allegedly blacklisted by the Ministry of Home Affairs for shouting slogans outside Indian Embassies in 1984 were being denied visas, even on humanitarian grounds.
Thus, on 19 May 2003, the Commission issued a notice to the Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India seeking a report on -
§ The total number of Sikh NRIs who were black-listed by the Ministry for the alleged reasons cited in the reference by the Chairman, National Commission for Minorities;
§ The date when the list was last revised; and,
§ The current status of that list and the possibility of its expeditious revision.
