Notice to IG (Prisons), Punjab on alleged branding of undertrial

The National Human Rights Commission has issued notice to the Inspector General of Prisons, Chandigarh, Punjab on the alleged branding of undertrial prisoner Rockey in Amritsar's Central Jail.
Taking suo-motu cognizance of the incident carried in the newspapers on 4 July 2004, the Commission has called for a report from the IG (Prisons), Punjab within six weeks.
According to the news report, Rockey, an undertrial prisoner, in a theft case had alleged that prison officials branded him 'Yeh Chor Hai' on his back on 1 July 2004. It was also reported that the IG of Punjab Police had ordered a probe into the incident.
