On NHRC recommendations more than Rs. 117 lakh paid as relief to the victims of human rights violation by centre and state authorities in April, 2016 [31.05.2016]

The National Human Rights Commission received reports of compliance of its recommendations in 44 cases by different public authorities at centre and states in the month of April 2016. Apart from initiating the departmental and criminal proceedings against the guilty public servants, they paid an amount of Rs.117.7 lakh as relief to the victims of human rights violations or their next of kin and also submitted a proof of payment as directed by the Commission.

Out of these 44 cases, maximum 28 cases pertain to violation of right to life in the actions or inactions of public authorities.

10 cases were of death in prison having a maximum number of four in the State of Uttar Pradesh followed by two in Andhra Pradesh and one each in Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Punjab.

Eight cases were of death in police custody with maximum three in Telangana followed by two in Uttar Pradesh and one each in Maharashtra, Gujarat and Meghalaya.

Seven cases were of death in police encounter with maximum five in the State of Assam followed by three in Uttar Pradesh.

Two cases were of death in police firing in Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat. One case was of an encounter by Assam Rifles in Manipur which the Union Defence Ministry could not prove to be genuine and eventually complied with the recommendations of the Commission paying Rs. 5 lakh to the victim's family.
