One Day Workshop for the Sensitization of Jail Superintendents of Haryana


A one-day workshop for the sensitization of Jail Superintendents of Haryana on the Human Rights of Prisoners was conducted by the NHRC in collaboration with the Jail Department of Haryana. It was held at the Haryana Police Complex, Madhuban, Karnal on 23 September 2005 and was attended by 14 Jail Superintendents and 4 District Probation Officers.
Inaugurating the workshop, Justice Y Bhaskar Rao, Member, NHRC exhorted the Jail Superintendents to take pride in their role as reformers and work with dedication in dealing with criminals. Emphasizing the role of the NGOs and Media in bringing about desired changes in the administration and working of jails, the Member advised the participants to enlist their support by introducing transparency and openness in their work. Shri Chaman Lal, Special Rapporteur, NHRC mentioned in brief the principles laid down by the Supreme Court which are meant to act as guidelines for treatment of prisoners and administration of jails. Shri Vikas, DG (Prisons), Haryana and Shri R.C. Jowel, IG (Prisons) were also present on the occasion.
