One person killed in police firing in West Bengal: NHRC issues notices to the concerned State authorities

The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report that in a police firing one person was killed and nine others were injured in the clashes that followed at Tehatta, Nadia District in West Bengal. Eight police personnel were also reported to had been injured in the incident.

The Commission has observed that the contents of the press report, if true, raise the serious issue of violation of human rights of the deceased and the injured.

Notices have been issued to the West Bengal Chief Secretary and DGP to submit reports in the matter within four weeks.

Allegedly, some villagers demanding permission to organize Jagadhatri Puja at a particular venue had put up a blockade at the Houlia More in Tehatta. Finding difficult to vacate the blockade, the Sub-Divisional police officer of Tehatta, alongwith few police personnel, opened fire at them resulting in the killing of one person.
