Online training of police personnel on human rights

The National Human Rights Commission in collaboration with the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) organized the third three-day online training of trainers on human rights for police personnel in the University campus from the 19th-21st March, 2012. This was attended by 28 police officials from 15 States.
Inaugurating the training programme, Mr. J.S. Kochher, Joint Secretary (Training), NHRC said that the ultimate objective of the training programme is to sensitize police personnel across the country about human rights through use of information technology. This online training with the use of IT infrastructure available with the IGNOU can be accessed by them from any part of the country. The participants of this programme are expected to learn not only the importance of human rights but also the technical aspects of this online training programme so that they could conduct such programmes for their fellow police officials as master trainers.
Addressing the concluding session, Prof. M. Aslam, Vice-Chancellor, IGNOU said that this kind of training programme could prove to be a useful tool in sensitizing police personnel about human rights if it is held at regular intervals. He also emphasized the need for formulating training modules based upon the background of the participants and a proper needs assessment in this respect.
