Chairman National Centre for Human Rights, Jordan.
Mr. Ahmad Obeidat, former Prime Minister of Jordan and currently, Chairman of Jordan National Centre for Human Rights accompanied by a diplomat from the Embassy of Jordan in Delhi visited the Commission on December 1, 2006 and called on Hon'ble Member Justice Y. Bhaskar Rao.
o Mr. Antonio Guterres, UN High Commissioner for Refugees.
The United Nation High Commissioner for Refugees, Mr. Antonio Guterres called on the Acting Chairperson of NHRC, Dr. Justice Shivaraj V. Patil on December 8, 2006. Later, an interactive meeting was held with other Members Justice Y. Bhaskar Rao, Shri R.S. Kalha and Shri P.C. Sharma. Senior officials were also present.
Dr. Justice Patil welcomed Mr. Guterres and briefed the visiting dignitary on the thirteen years of the Commission. He referred to the various issues being dealt by the Commission including the issue of refugees. He also highlighted that the Commission had visited the refugee camps in Tamil Nadu and surveyed the conditions there. Dr. Patil pointed out that India has been providing shelter to quite many refugees displaced from their countries. He said that the Commission has felt the need for a National Legislation to deal with the problem of refugees in India and has recommended the same to the Indian Government. He said the Government in principle has accepted it. The Acting Chairperson stressed that there has to be a clear definition of refugees so that it is not confused with other forms of migrant population. Dr. Patil said that this issue needs to be addressed, so that the benefits percolate to the bona-fide refugees.
Mr. Antonio Guterres praised the Indian Government's generosity in granting protection to a number of refugees. He supported the idea of a solid National Legislation and said that the UNHCR will extend all cooperation for such a Legislation. He assured that his organization would cooperate with the Commission and the Indian Government to provide assistance including training, exchange of practices and discussions in the problem areas concerning refugees.

Under staff visiting programme, the National Human Rights Commission of South Korea sent a team for interaction with the Senior Officials of the NHRC, India. The three-member team comprising Mr. Jaeman Park, Mr. Seongeheol Yook and Mr. Jinryul Choi interacted with the hosts on a number of issues. They include:-
§ Case Study on law, systems and policies harmonizing social security and human rights;
§ Study of the measures that prevent and protect human rights;
§ Effective tools for investigating and redressing violation of human rights;
§ Dynamics and functions of systems of human rights institutions;
§ System of guaranteeing basic human rights of suspects during interrogation.
