Over 8200 children's death alleged at Delhi's Safdarjung Hospital in last five years: NHRC issues notices to the concerned authorities

The National Human Rights Commission has issued notices to the Secretary, Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and Medical Superintendent, Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi, returnable in four weeks, on a complaint alleging that more than 8200 children up to the age of five years died during the last five years in the Safdarjung Hospital. Out of them about 3000 were newly born.

The complainant Mr. R.H. Bansal, a representative of an NGO, in his petition to the NHRC has claimed that he got the information from the hospital under RTI. He has also alleged that five out of eighteen ventilators for children were not functional. The conditions were unhygienic and there was an acute shortage of essential services at the hospital. He has also alleged that women were also dying during pregnancy in the hospital. Terming it as a serious issue of human rights violations of the victims, the complainant requested for NHRC's intervention.
