Illegal custody: NHRC issues notice to DIG, Gautam Budh Nagar, UP

The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo-motu cognizance of a media report that a man was locked-up in the Police Station, Sector – 58, NOIDA, UP for five days without a formal complaint or an FIR.
The Commission has observed that the contents of the press report, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of human rights of the victim and issued notice to Deputy Inspector General of Police, Gautam Budh Nagar, UP calling for a report in the matter.
Reportedly, the victim, runs a mobile phone shop in Vijay Nagar, Ghaziabad. He was picked up by police on 28th June, 2013 at around 03:00 a.m. and kept in the lock-up for 5 days on allegations that he purchased stolen mobile phones. However, there was no formal complaint or an FIR. He was thrashed and not provided food timely.
