Physically challenged Dalit youth set ablaze, NHRC calls for report from UP Police

Taking suo-motu cognizance of an incident of a Dalit youth being set ablaze in Uttar Pradesh, the Commission has directed the SSP, Varanasi to send a factual report on the matter within two weeks.
The incident was reported in a national daily on 3rd November 2004 under the caption "Dalit set ablaze". It stated that a physically challenged dalit youth was burnt alive when some unidentified assailants set ablaze his house in Bakhara village in adjoining Chandauli district. It reported that the deceased, 17-year-old Rahul Ram was alone in his house when it was set ablaze.
The Commission has observed that the death of a physically challenged boy in the said circumstances, as reported, raises serious issue of violation of human rights.
