Pilot Project for Prevention and Control of Nutritional Anaemia

The Commission had earlier proposed a Pilot Project for controlling nutritional anaemia (iron deficiency) among pregnant women, lactating mothers and adolescent girls specially those belonging to the poorer sections of the society. The Project was recommended to be taken up in Mahaboobnagar District of Andhra Pradesh.

The government of Andhra Pradesh has now decided to formulate a Pilot Project in association with the National Institute of Nutrition, Hyderabad and Andhra Pradesh Women Co-operative Finance Corporation (APWCFC) Ltd. The Project will involve baseline survey, supply of folifer tablets, collection of blood sample, analysis, evaluation, development of strategy, conducting workshops and imparting training towards controlling anaemia in adolescent girls and pregnant and lactating mothers. The State Government has decided to implement the Project for a duration of seven months through the APWCFC Ltd., with the assistance of the regular State machinery of the District Administration, particularly the Medical and Health Department and in association with prominent NGOs functioning in the district.

The State Government has also constituted a Committee headed by the Director, Women Development & Child Welfare, to coordinate the entire project. It has sanctioned a sum of Rs. 30.10 lakhs to meet the expenditure that shall be incurred in carrying out the project.
