Proper balance needed to uphold human dignity: Justice J.S. Verma
Justice Shri J.S.Verma Chairperson, NHRC delivered the annual Sarat Chandra Bose Memorial Lecture at the Netaji Research Bureau in Kolkata on 3 September 2002. Speaking on Civil liberties in difficult times he said, under the garb of national security, human rights and civil liberties in India are often violated.
The Chairperson stressed the need for a proper balance being achieved both by members of the judiciary and of the executive so that human dignity is upheld. He added that it was the prime responsibility of every state government to uphold human dignity, as well as the human rights and civil liberties of its citizens.
The Chairperson observed that intolerance was increasing in society at a disturbing pace. He called for the maintenance of communal harmony at all costs. It should be made mandatory for every student in India to study the contribution of great personalities in upholding the rights of the people, Justice Shri Verma said, while pointing out the lack of respect for human values in society today.
