Raped child rehabilitated through NHRC's intervention
New Delhi, 22 January 2004
The National Human Rights Commission's efforts in rehabilitating a 4-year-old tribal girl who had been brutally raped by a 26-year-old truck driver in Delhi on 17 March 2003 has met with success.
The Commission has received a report from the Medical Superintendent, Safdarjung Hospital, Delhi that the minor girl has now recovered fully after undergoing three successful surgeries to repair the ruptures she suffered as a result of the assault.
Relief on humanitarian ground as directed by NHRC has also been given to the girl by the Government of NCT of Delhi. The Commission was informed by the Sub Divisional Magistrate, Vasant Vihar, Delhi that a cheque of Rs.50,000/- in favour of the victim has been kept in a fixed deposit on 5 December 2003 in the Allahabad Bank in her name for 14 years. Her mother has been permitted to withdraw monthly interest for maintenance and medical treatment of her daughter. The amount on maturity of the FD would be paid to the victim who would by then have become an adult.
The Commission has also commended the role played by the NGO, PRAYAS in assisting the rehabilitation of the victim.
The Commission took up the case following a request by a social activist Shri Prithvish Sain seeking that the victim be given relief on humanitarian ground as her parents were not in a position to afford medical treatment for their child. The police have already arrested and registered a case against the perpetrator of the crime.
