Rejoinder on a press report on ex -NHRC man convicted of graft

New Delhi November 28, 2007 This pertains to the news item appeared in various newspapers, (clipping attached), wherein it has been stated that "ex-NHRC man convicted of graft".
The brief of the press clipping includes that "a court has sentenced a former National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) employee to two years' rigorous imprisonment after he was convicted of attempting to bribe an Special Protection Group (SPG) officer posted at the Central Secretariat. While employed at the NHRC, he was alleged also working as an unpaid executive on part-time basis for M/S Reliance International, who supplied Door Frame Metal Detectors (DFMDS). According to the prosecution, Sharma offered a bribe of Rs.2,000/- to Saxena, a security officer of the SPG, for clearing the payment dues of the company he was working for".
In the above context, it is submitted that the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has unnecessarily been dragged in the case, as the act for which Shri Sharma has been convicted does not pertain to any duty arising in connection with the work of the Commission. It is further stated that Shri Rama Kant Sharma was appointed in the Commission on re-employment basis w.e.f. 08.05.2001. However, as soon as the Commission came to know about Shri Sharma's involvement in the above case and registration of FIR against him, his service were immediately terminated as per the procedure w.e.f. 15.06.2001.
Hence it may be pertinent to note that he was on re-employment with NHRC for just about a month and soon as NHRC came to know about his criminal case, his services were terminated forthwith.
