Relatives unable to meet a human rights activist in jail (Case No.2/14/4/2011)

The relatives and friends of Ms. Iroma Shaimila Chanu, imprisoned in Imphal, allegedly, were not being able to meet her in jail due to restrictions imposed by the State Government. The matter was brought to the notice of the Commission, during the meeting of its Core Group of NGOs by Mr. Henry Tiphagne, a representative of an NGO. He said that Ms. Chanu, a poet, writer and human rights activist of Manipur had been contesting the provisions of Armed Forces Special Powers Act, AFSPA. She had been confined to the jail ward of Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital, Imphal, and was on a fast unto death. Taking suo motu cognizance of the issue, the National Human Rights Commission issued a notice to the Chief Secretary, Government of Manipur calling for a report in the matter.
