Reports sought from Haryana Government on Sonia-Rampal's status.

New Delhi, 26 October, 2004

The National Human Rights Commission has called upon the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police, Haryana as well as the Commissioner, Rohtak and SSP, Rohtak asking them to look into the allegations filed by Ms. Brinda Karat, General Secretary, All India Democratic Women Association, regarding the condition of the married couple Sonia and Rampal of Jhajjar District.

The Chairperson of the NHRC Dr. Justice A.S. Anand has asked that reports be submitted within a week and also directed the Commissioner, Rohtak and SSP, Rohtak to inform the Commission on what steps they have taken to ensure the personal safety of Sonia and Rampal.

Ms. Brinda Karat had alleged that in Asandha village, Jhajjar District, Haryana a couple, Rampal and a pregnant Sonia married for two years are being forced to declare themselves as brother and sister in the name of protection of 'gotra'. She further alleged that in spite of repeated representations to the authorities there have been no arrests of those guilty, no cases have been registered and the couple is unable to return to the village to reside.
