Rs. 5 lakh monetary relief in a case of death in police custody in UP

Chote Lal was picked up by the police in Badayun, Uttar Pradesh and was subjected to brutal torture in the year 2004. When his condition deteriorated, he was taken to Sadar Hospital, Badayun, where he was declared brought dead. His father Ramkrishan was also illegally detained by the police personnel for ten days without any case filed against him in the court.
On consideration of reports and the material on record; the Commission observed in its proceedings on the 19th May, 2010 that the police officers by misusing their power and authority had committed an act of murder of a person belonging to the SC category and recommended that the Uttar Pradesh Government pay Rs. 5 lakhs as monetary relief to the next of the kin of deceased Chote Lal.
The Commission also recommended that Rs. 50,000/- be paid to Mr. Ramkrishna, the father of the deceased, for his illegal detention by police. The Commission has sought proof of payment along with a compliance report.
